George Bailey is an invention of the mind of singer-songwriter Nathan Allen based in the greater Houston area. Inspired by the It’s a Wonderful Life character of the same name, George Bailey brings upbeat melodic junk punk tunes equally inspired by 60s boybands and 90s DIY garage punk.
Life as a DIY musician was a familiarity to Allen as a former member of musical acts such as The Sweaters and Blackmarket Syndicate. As a young adult, he began to draft lyrics for a new solo project unlike anything he had ever produced. With a handcrafted recording studio in a spare closet, Allen recorded the vocals and instruments for his never-before-heard lyrics five years later in 2016. The short and sweet nine-minute EP “Crybaby” featuring hit songs “Modern Man’s Disposition” and “Help Me Re Lax” would be released on George Bailey’s Bandcamp in 2017. Soon after the EP's release, George Bailey “signed a record deal” with the fictional label ‘H-E-B Records’. Allen was known to create mock social media accounts to create engagement and unintentionally confuse fans.
Allen was able to turn to the people close to him to form a band to start doing live performances as George Bailey in 2018. First was fellow punk musician and older brother Joel Allen on drums. Second was Cooper Gentles, a former music student of Allen’s on bass. Last was the addition of Brian Cox, a schoolteacher and Allen’s brother-in-law at the time on guitar and backing vocals. During 2018 and 2019, George Bailey played to tens of fans opening for bands like Such Marvelous Monsters, The Prettybads, and The Pink Spiders. George Bailey also performed at the premiere of Justin Cutburth’s short film “Extraction” at Share Space on October 6, 2019, in which guitarist Cox starred in.
Between George Bailey songs, Allen also made the creative decision to record stage banter in the style of retro commercials. The energetic performance style and comical recordings make every George Bailey show eccentric and entertaining for all ages. Allen said, “I want to make every show a memorable experience… If you don’t like the music, we will at least be entertaining.”
Allen also took creative control over aspects like merchandise production and designing cover art. He took inspiration for cover art from the artists he admired such as Iggy Pop, Misfits, and Weezer. Allen’s experience as a professional sign maker and screen-printer allowed him to print and distribute his own t-shirts and even phone case handles. His designs feature the It’s a Wonderful Life character and the reinvention of the iconic Ramones logo. In Allen’s own words, “The highest form of flattery is copyright infringement.”
With the departure of members Gentles and Cox, George Bailey rebranded to the solo project it remains today in 2020. Global events and the birth of Allen’s first daughter also brought live performances and new releases to temporarily come to a stop. Most recently, Allen released the single “It’s a _ Life” on April 16, 2021, with an accompanying performance video with a live premiere on YouTube. Allen said he is eager to record and release new singles as George Bailey in the near future.
